Meet our Trainers 

Adjunct Professor Peter Moore, Curtin University

Dr Moore has 40 years of business experience, with a focus on petroleum and energy. He has a BSc (Hons), a PhD, an MBA and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He spent much of his early career working for Esso Australia, and for Exxon Exploration Company in Houston, including as their worldwide head of Global Studies. In 1998 he returned to Australia to join Woodside Energy as Chief Geologist and subsequently led exploration and technology businesses in the USA and Australia. From 2009 to 2013, Dr Moore led Woodside’s global exploration as Executive Vice President Exploration. During his petroleum career, Peter has been involved in numerous petroleum discoveries both in Australia and overseas. After retiring from Woodside, Dr Moore was appointed as a Professor in Curtin University’s Business School where he also held the role of Executive Director, Strategic Engagement. Dr Moore is currently a Non-Executive Director of Beach Energy Ltd, an Adjunct Professor at Curtin University and a Member and former Chair of Curtin’s Faculty of Science and Engineering Advisory Council. He is a former Non-Executive Director at Central Petroleum Ltd (2014-2018) and Carnarvon Energy Ltd (2015-2023), and Chair of Earth Sciences WA (2014-2018). Dr Moore has his own consulting company focussed on providing executive education to industry and governments on the broad suite of technical and business topics relating to oil and gas, energy, and the energy transition. He has trained thousands of participants during this time, ranging from large multinational and domestic corporations to government agencies and SMEs, and has taught both in Australia and overseas. In 2023, Peter was awarded National Geoscience Champion by the Australian Geoscience Council, in recognition of the major contribution made to Australian Geoscience through decades of work and research across government, industry and academia, and his continued dedication to Geoscience excellence especially through transference of knowledge.

Associate Professor Steve Mackie, BSc, MBA and PHD  

Associate Professor Steve Mackie has 40 years’ experience in the upstream petroleum industry functioning in both regional and field specific geoscience and engineering.  

As well as running his own successful consultancy he has worked for multinationals and local explorers in both senior technical and executive roles.    

He serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide, is the Chairman of the advisory board for the Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide, and Chairman of the Australian Energy Producers Technical Program Committee.

He is also the editor of the Australian Energy Producers Journal (previously the APPEA Journal), Immediate Past Federal President of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA) (President 2015/17) and a distinguished Lecturer for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) (2016/17 season).

He is an honorary life member of Australian Energy Producers, an honorary life member of PESA, a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) and SPE.
