Plenary 2 Keynote Panel: Keeping the lights on | Is energy security taken for granted?
Tuesday, May 21, 2024 |
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM |
Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre |
Overview
Energy security is essential for a modern economy. For decades Australian natural gas has been a core pillar of energy security in Australia and the region. However, a turbulent 18 months — globally and at home — have raised questions regarding the security of Australian gas supply going forward. Domestically we see forecast gas shortfalls coupled with a host of government interventions that have impacted investment certainty and an approval process that isn’t fit-for-purpose with regulatory decisions unable to stand up to constant legal challenge. Internationally our formidable reputation as a reliable partner has come into question and we see an erosion of trust in Australian energy supplies among our regional allies. The repercussions could be severe — when energy security is jeopardised, energy prices rise and environmental targets are compromised.
This session will ask the questions: is Australia doing what it needs to do to keep the lights on at home and abroad? If not, can we correct course? What will be the fallout for Australians, our neighbours and the economy that rely on secure energy and the revenues from our sector if we can’t?
